Chemistry is the study of the structure, properties and functions of matter. Chemists study and design materials and products by exploring the principles that govern changes which occur in matter and devising methods by which those changes can be exploited to create entirely new materials and products. Consequently, a sound knowledge of chemistry is fundamental to a holistic understanding and application of other subjects including biology, geology, physics, meteorology, astronomy and engineering.
The BSc in Chemistry programme empowers its graduates with fundamental knowledge of the science that created today’s essential materials including penicillin, gasoline, plastics, fertilisers and nuclear energy in addition to the science that will solve on-going challenges, such as the need for sustainable energy sources and cleaner fuels, better climate and environmental health, and supermaterials.
The B. Sc. (Hons) Chemistry programme is designed to:
i. provide students with a thorough understanding of the basic principles of chemical sciences.
ii. develop in-depth skills in practical chemistry for analysis of materials and product development.
iii. expose students to the critical role the knowledge of Chemistry plays in the socio-economic development of countries and societies.
iv. produce graduates that understands the fundamental science and economics of industrial processes.
v. develop vocational, entrepreneurial, communication and leadership skills to be productive in the society.
- UTME Entry
The prospective candidates must have a minimum of five credits in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant science subjects at the Ordinary level (O’ Levels) Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations. The UTME cut-off mark for the programme will be determined and announced at each admission cycle. The UTME subject combination required for admission is English Language, Chemistry and any of Physics, Mathematics and Biology.
- Direct Entry
Students with an Ordinary National Diploma from an accredited polytechnic or other equivalent institutions, will be considered for admission provided they graduated from the respective institutions with a minimum of Lower Credit grade (or its equivalent) in addition to fulfilling the O’ Level subject requirement listed above. Candidates with at least a credit (Grade C) in three subjects (Graded A-E) at the Advanced Level exams in Chemistry and any of Mathematics and/or Physics and Biology or Botany or Agricultural Science may be considered for admission through direct entry into second year.
